about us

Keau Manu Aviary was founded to help with the crucial work of preserving avian species in American Aviculture.

Nestled on a secluded vista in the hills of Tennessee, Keau Manu Aviary promotes responsible breeding, care, and handling of such protected species as Eclectus, Blue-Belled Roller, Red-crested Turaco,  Green Aracari, Citron-crested Cockatoo and Violaceous Turaco

Working in concert with
the Associationof Zoos and Aquariums on their Species Survival Programs and other such initiatives, we endeavor to help preserve endangered and threatened species.

Every facet of our work in American Aviculture preservation is informed by our steadfast desire to maintain a population that is free from the threat of poaching and extinction. As views and laws change in the United States and the world, we continue to be a beacon, a voice, and an advocate for endangered avian species.

We proudly serve as home to an incredible array of birds that serve as species ambassadors at zoos and aquariums, as well as others who serve the vital purpose of backup population to species that are disappearing in the wild.

About Me:

I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. I have always had a passion for animals. When I was a young child I was always amazed with the animal kingdom and the variety of animals that inhabited it. I started my adventure with an internship at the Honolulu Zoo when I was in high school.

I moved to Nashville in 2001 to expand my horizons. I was excited by all the possibilities that living in the continental United States had to offer. I was finally able to work with some of the species that fascinated me as a child. This included snakes. I started a breeding program for pituophis (Pine snakes and Bull Snakes).

In 2007 I started an internship at the Tulsa Zoo in the mixed species Tropical Rainforest Exhibit. This later transitioned into a paid position in the reptile department. This amazing experience allowed me to work with many species including reptiles and birds.

In 2011 I moved back to Nashville where I accepted a position as a bird keeper. There I worked with many different species. I was fortunate to work with Great Blue Turaco which started my love for the Musophagidae family. Over this time I was able to attend many AZA Conferences, workshops, and participate in keeper exchanges. The Houston Zoo was gracious to host me several times where I was able to work with one of the largest collections and knowledgeable agriculturalist. Their collection includes one of the largest collections of Turaco.

In 2015 I left the zoo to work in the private sector. I managed a large private collection in Georgia while based in Nashville. This included all aspects of husbandry. Spending countless hours visiting zoos all over the world as well as in the United States I talked to many keepers and curators. I looked at everything from diets to enclosures. As most people go to look at the animals which was a plus I was there to see what was working and what was not.

In 2017 I started construction of Keau Manu Aviary in Nashville. It was built to the highest standards with information I have collected from my travels and experience.

In 2018 I decided to use all of the knowledge that I have learned to help maintain certain populations of birds in American Aviculture. I fully support the AZA and the missions of many of the Zoos in their organization. Zoos are where I got my passion for animals. Being able to see all these species close up gave me a better understanding of nature and how to do my part to save it. I am currently breeding many of these species to help make sure that they are around in zoos to give the next generation a chance to experience what I have. This would also help to maintain a population in case there is ever a need for wild introductions.
